In February 2006, the Department of Information and Telecommunication Technologies of the Municipal Office in Ceske Budejovice (IT SCCB) tendered out a project to upgrade the existing web maps of the Statutory City of Ceske Budejovice (SCCB). The upgrade was to
enhance the information offered to the city citizens and tourists. After all the bids were opened, the customer decided to contract the work out to T-MAPY spol s r.o.
To create the map projects defined, we used background materials (data files) supplied by IT SCCB and, also, materials supplied by individual SCCB Departments. To meet all the SCCB requirements, we implemented the following applications: T-MapServer, T-WIST REN, and T-WIST UIR and, at the same time, we utilized the latest functionalities, namely in case of T-MapServer.
The objectives of the project implementation were:
- to create two map projects, utilizing the MapServer, and allow the employees appointed by customer to update the data stored on the server
- map intended for the public (for the city inhabitants – HTML client)
- basic GIS project (for the Municipal Office employees – clerk client)
- to tune the individual data layers for best performance in the map server environment.
The finished project is available at http://mapy.c-budejovice.cz/.
The project enables the visualization of many thematic layers over the basic set of layers:
- web cameras
- sightseeing trails
- handicapped access trails
- bike trails
- public transportation routes with a link to www.idos.cz
- points of interest
- flood land areas
- town street cleaning schedules
- locations of containers for waste separation and recycling
- public parks/LI>
- road signaling and marking
- parking lots
- traffic lights and other visual warnings
In addition to common functions, the map server for public also features the search for addresses, objects and their links to web sites (cinemas, theatres, hotels, boarding houses, railway stations, police stations, fire houses, government institutions and offices, hospitals, pharmacies, banks, automated teller machines, schools, sports grounds, filling stations), interactive bubble help for each point object, public transportation network connections that include the schedule database, language versions (English, German), and many others.
The standard GIS client, that is available to the Municipal Office employees and to the thematic layers administrators, features additional tools to:
- measure route lengths, point-to-point distances, and area sizes
- edit points, lines, and polygons
- edit the attribute tables
- select neighboring objects
We are believe that the implemented project will inspire our future customers
