GIS to combat illegal drugs
Facts:
  • In 2006, 1 700 000 syringes were turned in by Prague drug users under the syringe exchange program.
  • Approximately 70% of these syringes came in contact with blood infected with different types of hepatitis.
  • Without providing help, most of these syringes would end up lying in Prague streets.
  • 70% of elementary school pupils tried smoking cigarettes. The number of young smokers has doubled since 1990s and is rapidly growing.
  • Dependency on tobacco and alcohol may lead to the dependency on other addictive substances.
  • 300 000 habitual drinkers are known to exist in the Czech Republic and their number is growing, namely among females.

There is about a hundred of centers that offer help to combat a range of negative addictions. Some of the centers are focused on specific primary prevention, others get involved directly in the streets, offer different forms of prevention, or treatment. To provide just the right help – to the addicts, their parents, or the educators – the Regional Department for Drug Prevention at the Prague City Hall initiated the establishment of the Centers to Combat Illegal Drugs in Prague application.

Starting July 2007, the WebGIS Prague system also contains a web map application intended for public: Centers to Combat Illegal Drugs in Prague. This application allows users to look up the facilities by name / sphere / prevention / activities / administration district. The user defined facilities are then displayed in the map – either all together or individually. At the same time, the basic set of information on the facilities can be printed (again, all together or individually). The information includes contacts, link to web page, annotation, target group, etc. The centers to combat drugs usually do not usually beat the eyes of the passers by, so a little map or picture of the entranceway in the printout helps.

The Centers to Combat Illegal Drugs in Prague application consists of two major parts that communicate with each other:
